Nigerian football legend criticises IFFHS for naming Vincent Enyeama best ever African goalkeeper

Vincent Enyeama's remarkable skills between the goalposts have recently been acknowledged by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), who crowned him the finest African goalkeeper in history.

Surpassing a roster of esteemed contenders such as Cameroon's Thomas Nkono, Egypt's Essam El-Hadary, and Joseph Antoine Bell, the former Nigerian shot-stopper claimed this prestigious accolade.

Throughout his illustrious career, spanning various leagues, the 41-year-old amassed a plethora of individual honours. Notably, he clinched the title of best goalkeeper in the Israeli Premier League thrice and was named as the best shot-stopper in Ligue 1 during the 2013-2014 season.

However, former Nigerian midfielder and Enyeama's teammate, Duke Udi, has voiced criticism against the award committee's decision, questioning the recognition bestowed upon the revered goalkeeper.

Udi criticises IFFHS

In a recent interview captured by media outlet, Football Live, the esteemed former Nigerian midfielder shared his perspective on the legendary Enyeama's prowess. While acknowledging Enyeama's proficiency as a shot-stopper during his prime, he respectfully challenged the notion that Enyeama holds the title of the greatest goalkeeper ever in Africa.

"In my view, Enyeama is a good goalkeeper, but he's not the best in Africa. What about Anthony Bell? That's what I'm asking."

"Vincent is a very good goalkeeper; he's one of the best, but I can't say he's the best. That's just their opinion. I think there are about three or four goalkeepers who are better than him. He's in the top five in Africa, but not the best."

These remarks from the 47-year-old have ignited diverse reactions within Nigerian football circles. While some uphold Enyeama as a deserving recipient of accolades, others have criticised the former midfielder’s stance, urging him to extend support to his former teammate rather than critique his achievements.

Notably, Enyeama currently holds a prestigious record in the French topflight, boasting the highest number of clean sheets in a single season with an impressive tally of 21 shutouts during the 2013-2014 campaign.
