AFCON: Comparing Nigeria’s Kaftan to Ghana’s Kente as Super Eagles and Black Stars arrive in style

Ghana and Nigeria have already captured the admiration of many before stepping onto the field for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, set to be hosted by Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.

As 23 African nations, in conjunction with the hosts, gather for this football spectacle, the arrival of teams has already drawn attention, especially with their striking fashion choices.

With the host nation Ivory Coast ready for the opening match against Guinea Bissau on Saturday, January 13, attention has turned to the participating teams, captivating football enthusiasts with their style and attire.


Top among them are West African rivals Ghana and Nigeria, who have caused tongues to wag on social media with their choice of outfits for the 34th edition of the AFCON.

According to Pulse, the Super Eagles departed from Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport adorned in traditional African attire, sporting grand white kaftans complemented by green headgear, symbolizing the national colours.


Led by captain Ahmed Musa and reigning African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, the three-time African champions made a striking appearance in traditional attire on their arrival in the Ivory Coast.

History of the Kaftan

As per Francis Polo, the term "Kaftan" traces its roots back to ancient Mesopotamia, worn by Persians around 600 BC.

This attire originated in Morocco in the 16th century and spread across Africa, becoming a staple for many tribes, particularly in Nigeria.

Ghana's stylish Kente arrival

In contrast, the Black Stars of Ghana opted for a resplendent traditional attire known as Kente.


Departing from the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the four-time African champions sported simple white African shirts over white shorts, elevating their look with vibrant and colourful Kente outfits upon disembarking from the plane.
