'Proud haters' – Super Eagles fans pray for Ghana’s defeat to Portugal in World Cup clash

Several Nigerian fans are hoping that Ghana’s Black Stars will suffer a heavy defeat to Portugal when the two continental giants meet on Thursday evening.

Ghana and Portugal will face later today at the Stadium 974 in a Group G clash of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars will be the underdogs against a Selecao side that boasts the talents of Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, among others.

Qatar 2022 has witnessed a number of surprising underdog victories, including Saudi Arabia’s famous win over title favourites Argentina and Japan’s stunning triumph over former world champions Germany.

And Ghanaians will be hoping the Black Stars can pull a similar David-versus-Goliath win against Portugal.

But the sentiments among a significant number of Nigerians is for the Black Stars to be humiliated at the hands of the Portuguese.

The five-time Afcon winners are why the Super Eagles are not in Qatar, having claimed the World Cup qualification ticket at the expense of their eternal rivals.

Many Super Eagles fans have not forgotten that disappointment, and some confessed via Twitter that they have been ‘sacrificing’ for a Portugal win.

“I just came back from dedicating a sacrifice to ensure Ghana’s defeat and a Ronaldo masterclass today. When it comes to football and Ghana. I no Dey do one Africa.”
