Why are we focusing on his error? - Popular Nigerian sports journalist rebukes fans after Onana errior

Popular sports Oma Akatugba has come to the defense of Manchester United’s new goalkeeper Andre Onana after conceding a goal from the center of the circle in the friendly against French club Lens on Saturday.

Onana, who recently signed for United was in for a rude awakening while playing his first home match against the French club.

In the 27th minute, Florian Sotoca took advantage of a misplaced pass by Diogo Dalot and tried a chip shot from near the center circle. The 27-year-old Onana who was positioned a bit far away from his goal had to backtrack but could not make a save as he helplessly saw the ball going inside the net.

This was a few minutes after United’s midfielder Mason Mount had failed to put the Red Devils ahead when he fluffed a chance to score an open goal.

Reacting, Oma, in a video on Instagram rebuked football fans for focusing on the goal, calling on them to focus on the scoreline at the end of the game.

He further stressed that Onana is one of the best black goalkeepers in Europe at the moment.

"Why are we focusing on his error when Manchester United won the game? Onana is the most confident goalkeeper alive and that is something that is a plus. We must encourage him for being such a confident goalkeeper and a black goalkeeper at that," he said.

"It is not easy to see a black goalkeeper at that level. That is the highest of levels and he has taken it to that level."
