Why Nigeria cannot hire Herve Renard as next Super Eagles coach

Nigeria’s quest to hire Herve Renard could be the dream of every supporter of the national team but that huge ambition most likely will not see the light of day due to the financial implications.

The Nigeria Football Federation are still searching for a competent coach to replace Jose Peseiro who led the Super Eagles to win the silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

According to the Daily Post, the NFF is interested in making Renard the new head coach of the Super Eagles although the two-time AFCON-winning coach is still the manager of the France Women’s team.

Over 100 coaches had applied to become the next Nigeria coach, including interim manager Finidi George and former international Emmanuel Amunike after the NFF declared the position vacant.

The next coach of the Super Eagles will be charged with qualifying Nigeria for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and also reaching the final of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

Why NFF cannot hire Renard

Meanwhile, Renard’s huge salary expectation could become the major stumbling block in the NFF’s ambition to hire the former Ivory Coast and Zambia manager.

Per Soccernet, the 65-year-old manager, who has hinted at quitting as France women’s national team coach after the Paris Olympics, will reportedly earn a whopping $150,000 monthly salary.

Renard’s expected salary will be three times in value of what the NFF struggled to pay former coach Peseiro who was on a monthly salary of $50,000 by Nigeria’s football body.

The humongous amount of Renard’s salary could force the NFF to botch their plans of hiring him and stick to selecting one of the local coaches to become the next Super Eagles coach.
