Why I thought my move to Manchester United was a mistake - Evra

Patrice Evra Patrice Evra

Patrice Evra has recounted how he thought it was a mistake signing for Manchester United in 2006.

The Frenchman had turned down offers from Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid to play for Manchester United.

He said upon arrival: "I was not very keen to go forward in the talks with Arsenal, Liverpool or Real Madrid.

"They all talked with my agent in the past two seasons. But to me, it was over.

"As I said to the Monaco officials, I only wanted to hear about Manchester."

However, his first few months at the club were met with criticisms from fans who felt signing him was a mistake after he failed to show form.

His debut was against city rivals Manchester City which they lost 3-1.

“‘What the hell am I doing here?“ he said.

”I was chilling in Monte Carlo chilling, but here the football is so fast.

"'Oh my God, you’re so done Patrice. You should go back to Monte Carlo’. I remember thinking that and the worst part is when the game was finished.

“We went back to my flat with my agent and his wife and my agent looked at me like this and said, ‘Patrice, I’m sorry’.

"I was like, ‘Why?’ ‘I’m sorry to bring you here. You’ll never make it, it’s too hard, you should stay in Monte Carlo’. In front of his wife!

“That day I was so bad, so embarrassing. My agent actually telling me I should have never gone to Manchester United.

"So yeah, I have this tough moment, but it helped me to become who I am.“

The Dakar born Frenchman went on to fight for his form and become one of the best left-backs the English Premier League has ever seen.

He concluded his time at Manchester United winning five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League in 2008.
