Why Chelsea have omitted Lavia, Palmer, Colwill from Premier League squad list

Chelsea joined the rest of the English Premier League clubs in submitting no more than a 25-man squad list for registration for the first part of the 2023/2024 campaign.

The clubs had until Wednesday, September 13, to submit their squads ahead of the resumption from the international break this weekend.

The Blues have been the heaviest spenders since the current owners took over last summer. This year alone has seen more than 15 new players arrive, with a good number leaving as well.

The turnover means that Mauricio Pochettino's side submitted a new-look side that will seek to rectify the wrongs of last season, where they finished 12th after swapping managers four times.

New signings Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, who is currently sidelined with injury, lead the squad list. The list, according to Premier League rules, must contain no more than 17 overseas players, with eight spots reserved for homegrown players.

Why some players have not been included

Afterwards, the club can register players who are not yet 21 separately in the U21 list who can still be called up for Premier League duty. For this season, players born after January 1 2002, are not part of the Team A squad.

This explains why expected first-teamers like Cole Palmer, Carney Chukwuemeka, Levi Colwill and Romeo Lavia were missing from the main squad with their names featuring on the U21's list.

Chelsea will be back in action this weekend when they face Bournemouth. Pochettino has endured a tough start to life in West London, winning only once in his first four games in charge in the league. They, ironically, currently sit 12th in the Premier League Standings.
