The reason for Joe Aribo's absence from the squad to face Algeria has emerged.

The 26-year-old was excluded from the 22-man squad published by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) on Saturday, September 17.

Rumors suggested that the Saints midfielder had asked to be excused in order to allow him time to settle in at his new club.

However, the real reason he was excluded was disclosed by a team official who spoke exclusively to The Punch.

The sources added that the coach wants to give other players the opportunity in the central midfield area.

“The coach wants to test some other players in the central midfield position and that’s why Raphael Onyedika was invited,” the source who spoke under conditions of anonymity told the PUNCH Sports Extra.

“Also, Aribo exclusion is to help him settle in well at his new club though there are some personal issues he wants to sort out.”

Other key players like Victor Osimhen, Sadiq Umar, Ahmed Musa, Samuel Chukwueze, Leon Balogun, and Henry Onyekeru among other players all missing from the squad due to injury.

The Super Eagles will take on Desert Foxes on September 27 at Oran Olympic Stadium in Belgaïd, Algeria.
