Lionel Messi consistently receives high praise from some of the greatest figures in the history of football.

Earlier this year, former Real Madrid star, Xabi Alonso, offered insights into why the Argentine maestro is exceptionally talented while drawing comparisons with Bayer Leverkusen's standout, Florian Wirtz.

Having faced Messi in El Clasico clashes during their playing days in Spain, the ex-Spanish international, who is now the manager of Bayer Leverkusen, can draw parallels between Messi and his current player, Florian Wirtz, recognizing similarities in their playing styles.

In an interview earlier this year, as noted by Sportskeeda, Alonso delved into what sets Messi apart from other players.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder pointed out that Messi's exceptional quality lies in his capability to make intelligent decisions on the field.

Alonso further emphasised that Wirtz shares this particular attribute with the Argentine icon, per GOAL.

“Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: "You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!“It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good,” Alonso stated.

It's noteworthy that Wirtz has garnered comparisons to Messi since making a breakthrough in the German Bundesliga a few years ago.

The talented attacking midfielder has attracted interest from various clubs across Europe, with rumours even linking him to Messi's former club, Barcelona, per ESPN.

In the current season, the 20-year-old has impressively scored six goals and provided 10 assists for Leverkusen in various competitions.

Given his outstanding performance, only time will reveal how much longer the Bundesliga side can retain him, considering the growing interest in his talent.
