Leicester City defender Ashleigh Plumptre has praised Nigeria's U-17 women's team, Flamingos despite their disappointing defeat to Columbia in the semi-final of the FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria's Flamingos lost 6-5 in penalty shootouts to the South Americans after both teams failed to find the back of the net after 90 minutes of action.

Flamingos took the lead in the shootouts after Yesica missed Columbia's third spot kick courtesy of a brilliant save from substitute goalkeeper Jiwuaku.

Ndafe, who scored two penalties against the USA in the quarterfinals was presented with another opportunity to score what could have been the winner for Nigeria, but her effort hit the woodwork.

With the pressure now shifted toward Nigeria, Folorunsho who couldn't cope missed the Flamingos seventh spot kick in the sudden death to hand over the grand finale ticket to Columbia.

Reacting to the Flamingo's defeat, Super Falcons defender Plumptre took to social media to congratulate coach Olowookere Bankole's side for their historic feat in the tournament thus far.

“What a team this U17 group are! Flamingoes, we are SO proud of you -
@NGSuper_Falcons! Heartbreaking to go out on penalties but what a journey. The epitome of team spirit and togetherness ????????????????,”
the 24-year-old tweeted.

Nigeria will now take on either Germany or Spain for a third-place finish.
