A year after Barcelona suffered a famous loss to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League semi-final, the words of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez before and after the game have been revealed.

Barcelona moved into the second leg away at Anfield after a 3-0 win at the Nou Camp with Suarez getting a brace and Messi making it 3-0.

However, things turned horrible for the Catalans as Liverpool stole the night with a 4-0 win to book a place in the final which they also won.

“It was very clear, it would have been better to finish with four than with three,” Messi said after the first leg.

“We know the game isn't over, we know we're going to a very difficult stadium with a lot of history, where the fans are really behind their team.”

The loss prevented Messi from reaching the final which would have given him the opportunity to equal Ronaldo's Champions League trophy silverware record.

Suarez who moved to Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014 had some words to say about the second leg which saw them crashing out of the competition.

“I think we have to do a lot of self-criticism, we are adults, we have many years in this category,” he said.

“We must reproach ourselves for things that we have done wrong, like thinking that everything was liquidated. We should not blame the coach, we are the players who play.

“I do not know if it's a matter of attitude, but we're in Barcelona , we cannot get two goals in a row.

“The fourth is a goal by kids.”
