Akwa United head coach, Kennedy Boboye has advised his players to stay focused as they edging closer to their first Nigeria Professional Football League title.

Akwa United defeated eight champions Enyimba 1-0 at home on Sunday to open five points lead on top of the table.

Striker Charles Atshimene grabbed the only goal of the encounter from the penalty spot with just two minutes left in the normal time.

Speaking after the game mentality praised his team fighting spirit and determination to search for the winner until the end.

“It was a tough match against a very strong and tactical side (Enyimba). I give a big thumbs up to the players who fought hard throughout the match. The players showed a lot of positive mentality, character and resilience throughout the match. I am proud of them,” a joyous Boboye said.

The result means that Akwa is now five points clear of second-placed Nasarawa United who themselves suffered a 2-1 at FC Ifeanyi Ubah ahead of next week’s visit to Rivers United.

Boboye however hinted that the promise put Sunday’s victory behind them and quickly focus on a trip to Rivers United next weekend in Port Harcourt.

“We have to keep our feet on the ground and not get carried away. We have to take the matches one after the other. The Enyimba match is done and dusted and now we have to focus on the next one which is Rivers United on Sunday. We have to make sure that we follow up this result with a positive one against Rivers United. We must go there and fight hard to get something from the match.”
