Former Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi has warned Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso that he risks losing Willian Estevão at the end of the season if he fails to give the young Brazilian enough playing time.
After an impressive first season at the club, during which he scored eight goals and registered four assists following his move from Palmeiras, the 19-year-old has struggled for game time under new boss Xabi Alonso this season.
The Spanish manager prefers the trio of João Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in attack for the Blues, relegating the young prospect to the bench.
Speaking on his Obi One podcast, Mikel disclosed that Estevão was frustrated by his lack of playing time and wanted to leave Stamford Bridge.
“I just think what Estevão did last season since joining the football club, he’s been superb, he’s been brilliant.
“Okay, maybe don’t start him in games. But bring him on in the second half because he is brilliant.
“We can see glimpses of that when he comes on the pitch; he’s given us so much joy, so I want to see him play.
“Not a criticism of Xabi Alonso, but it’s something that he needs to look at. We have a young player; the last thing we want to see him do is leave the football club.
“There are rumours now that he’s frustrated and wants to leave the club. We don’t want to see that.”
