'We can beat Wydad' - Eguma

Rivers United head coach Stanley Eguma believes that his charges can beat North African giants Wydad Casablanca at the next stage of their CAF Champions League qualifying game.

The NPFL champions have been drawn against the Moroccan side after they edged out Liberia's Watanga 3-1 on aggregate in the previous round.

The pride of Rivers faces a daunting prospect as they come against the Reigning champions of the competition.

Head coach, Stanley Eguma has acknowledged that Wydad is a strong opposition and at the same time defending champions with a lot of experience in the competition.

He, however, believes that Wydad is a beatable side if only his team can prepare adequately before their clash.

“It is quite true that Wydad Casablanca are a very strong team in Africa and are the defending champions and we also acknowledge the fact that they have been there and have a lot of experience, but football is not mathematics,” he told The PUNCH.

“We are not going to rest on our oars; we are going to intensify our preparations and fashion out a strategy that will help us overcome them. It is very possible that we can beat them; it is even good for us that we are the underdogs because the pressure will be on them. They will see us as easy opponents, but we are going to do our best and see how we can overcome them.”

Rivers will take on Wydad Casablanca at home in the first leg on October 7 before travelling to Casablanca a week later for the second leg on October 14.
