Lionel Messi nets superb freekick on his Inter Miami debut

It was a historic night for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami as the Argentina captain got his campaign off to a blistering start with a late winner on Friday night.

The 36-year-old scored a stunning freekick deep into extra time after coming on as a second half substitute on his debut for the David Beckham co-owned club.

Again, the World Cup winner proved why he considered arguably the greatest of all time as he left the 20,000 crowd at Miami's DRV PNK Stadium speechless as Inter Miami beat Cruz Azul 2-1 in the League Cup.

Speaking after his historic debut, the Argentina captain said:

"I knew I had to score, it was the last play of the game. I wanted to score so we didn’t go to penalties. It was very important for us to get this win, it’s a new tournament, it’s going to give us confidence moving forward," said the Argentine.

Messi was introduced into the game in the 54th minute alongside his old Barcelona pal Sergio Busquets, and the duo looked sharper on the night even in their mid-thirties.
