Former Super Eagles international John Mikel Obi is rooting for his former club Chelsea ahead of their UEFA Champions Leagues clash against Real Madrid later today (April 12).
The Blues will travel to Santiago Bernabeu for the first-leg quarterfinals of the UCL as they take on the title holders and 14-time winners.
Chelsea have been shambolic all season leading to the sacking of Graham Potter. In his stead came Frank Lampard who returned to the Stamford Bridge dugout as caretaker coach.
Real Madrid on the other hand have had their fair share of troubles this season, as Carlo Ancelotti is being linked with a move away from the La Liga giants at the end of the season.
Mikel, who featured for the Blues for eleven seasons at Stamford Bridge winning the UCL title in 2012 believes the Los Blancos are firm favourites heading into the tie.
He, however, backed his former side to cause an upset by edging the La Liga champions from the competitions.
“When it comes to the remaining games in the Premier League I think Frank Lampard has got nothing to lose but when you look at the Champions League every body thinks it is going to be a Madrid win but I hope that Chelsea can be able to do it,” told Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport.
“When you look at the two teams and considering who is in form and who is not in form, I think Madrid are playing very well and they just beat Barcelona 4-0 at home. If you look at both teams and size them up you will believe that Madrid are going to go through but I hope my old team can do it and with Frank Lampard in charge I hope he can bring back the magic to the club.
“It is going to be a tough game for Chelsea playing against Madrid but I want to give Chelsea a chance.”
