Newly elected Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau has commended Nigeria's U-17 Women's team, Flamingos for their historic feat at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in India.

The Flamingos lost 6-5 on penalties to Columbia in the semi-final at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, India after a fairy-tale win against tournament favourites the United States of America in the quarterfinals.

After a goalless stalemate in 90 minutes, the game progressed to the lottery of penalty shootouts.

Nigeria, who were in a comfortable lead after the South Americans missed their third spot kick couldn't capitalise on that advantage as Ndafe failed to convert what could've been the winner for coach Olowookere Bankole's side.

The shootouts progressed to sudden death with a shift of momentum tilting toward the Columbians.

The Flamingos missed their seventh spot kick as Nigeria handed the ticket to the grand finale to Columbians.

Reacting to the defeat, Gusau who was in the stadium to support the girls lauded the Flamingos for their outstanding performance in the tournament.

“Amazing performance by the girls and I’m very proud of them despite the outcome of the match. Their development and welfare remains a priority to us. Well done girls,” the NFF chief said as per Complete Sports.

Nigeria will face Germany again for a third-place finish on Friday, October 28.
