High-flying Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion have shown interest in Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey.

Bassey, 23, joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers last summer in a deal worth £18.7m, becoming the club's most expensive defender.

The move also saw Bassey become the most expensive Nigerian player in history, surpassing Taribo West's move from Auxerre to Inter Milan.

According to reports, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has identified Calvin Bassey as a suitable option to strengthen his defensive back line as the club prepares for European football next season.

Bassey has so far failed to live up to the hype after his record move to the Johan Cruyff Arena last summer.

His performance has seen him dropped to the bench following the sacking of former boss Alfred Schreuder last season.

Bassey's poor showing has drawn a barrage of criticism from fans and some club legends who claimed he is not worth his transfer fee.

Ajax will be willing to let Bassey leave if Brighton can table a good offer for the Super Eagles striker.
