Tottenham vs Liverpool: A look at the exact ‘human error' Klopp responds to PGMOL apology

Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham on Saturday, September 30 should have counted, Referees' body PGMOL has come out to admit.

With the scores 0-0 and Liverpool one man down, 26-year-old Diaz raced through on goal to slot home, but the goal was immediately flagged for offside after what was an unusually quick VAR check by match official Darren England.

Liverpool went on to lose the game 2-1, after a late own goal from Joel Matip in the sixth minute of added time.

Barely hours after the game, PGMOL released a statements saying the decision against Luis Diaz was a ‘human error’.

As per Sky Sports, the statement read: "PGMOL acknowledges a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool.

"The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention. However, the VAR failed to intervene.

"PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool after the fixture to acknowledge the error."

It is understood that lines had been drawn to determine whether Diaz was offside. However, VAR incorrectly believed the on-field decision was the goal was allowed to stand, and this effectively led to a “check complete”, instead of an intervention as would have been the case if VAR did not realize the goal was ruled out.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has responded to PGMOL’s statement, and the German was understandably irate.

“What does that help?” Klopp said. “We had that situation in the Man United game. Did Wolves get a point for it? We won’t get points for it.”

He added: “We all thought that when VAR came, it would make things easier.”
Liverpool’s next game is in the Europa League on Thursday, October 5 against Union Saint-Gilloise.
