The Italian top-flight kicks off the 2020-21 season this weekend, and Crotone’s primary objective will be to avoid instant demotion back to the Serie B

Crotone forward Simy Nwankwo is aware that a difficult campaign awaits the Serie A new boys, but he believes that the club has the resources to retain their top-flight status at the end of the season.

Crotone suffered relegation two years ago, but the Pythagoreans are back in the Serie A this term, all thanks to Nwankwo’s goals.

The Nigeria international smashed in 20 goals in 37 Serie B games amid other dazzling displays, to emerge as his club’s and the division’s top-scorer.

Nwankwo knows the terrain in the Serie A is a different proposition, having been a part of the Crotone side that could not cope with the demands of the elite league but crumbled back to the lower division last time out.

The 28-year-old has warned that no game will come easy for Crotone, but he is confident his side has all it takes to achieve success in the top-flight.

“Sunday will start another important season both for Crotone and for our life,” Nwankwo told the club website.

“It will be difficult, and we know it. We are trying to prepare for it very well. Serie A is difficult, and it won’t be easy for anyone.

“It will be a really tough and long season, but I believe we have the squad to do well.”

Nwankwo’s Crotone square up against Genoa in the season opener on Sunday and will target all three points at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris in Genova.
