Super Eagles set to play Portugal in international friendly

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in an international friendly billed for September.

This was disclosed by the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) Secretary, Muhammad Sanusi.

Nigeria were initially scheduled to take on Guinea-Bissau in a Nations Cup qualifier double-header in September but the games were postponed last month by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

With the AFCON qualifiers rescheduled to March 2023, the NFF is working around the clock to arrange some international friendlies for the three-time African champions.

According to Sanusi, discussions with the Portuguese FA on a friendly game have progressed.

“We are working on arranging a grade A friendly game with Portugal ahead of the next FIFA window,” he told the PUNCH.

“Following the postponement of the AFCON a friendly game is necessary for the Eagles.

“Arrangements are in full gear and we are close to finalising the details. Once that is done a statement will be released by the Nigeria Football Federation.”

It will be the first time both nations will meet at the senior level.

The game will form part of Portugal's preparation for Qatar 2022 as they face Ghana who snatched the World Cup ticket from Nigeria in the playoffs in March.
