Steven Gerrard has opened up on the things that transpired which made him turn down a contract extension with Liverpool.

Gerrard whose contract expired in 2015 failed to renew it which lead to him making a move to LA Galaxy in the MLS.

Regretting the decision, Gerrard expressed how exciting it would have been playing under manager Jurgen Klopp.

In a chat with Jamie Carragher on The Greatest Game podcast , he said: “That’s a decision I regret because I might have got the back end of Klopp and maybe got the back end of playing 20 games under the Klopp era. From a football point of view, [I wish I’d stayed] one million per cent.”

He revealed that he turned down the contract because it made a requirement on his performance and appearance.

He said: “I still feel a little bit sorry for Brendan at that time because I think certain people still probably blame him for phasing me out. But I don’t think he phased me out because he offered me another year. He was definitely keen for me to stay.”

He, however, refused to blame then manager, Brendan Rogers, for how his 26-year affiliation with Liverpool ended.

He said: “All of a sudden, I was getting offered a contract on the amount of appearances and starts and Premier League goals I was going to score. At that age I just felt that wasn’t right. So, I think that part is the bit that annoys me on the handling of it.”

Despite not holding his exit from the club against Rogers, Gerrard revealed that he wasn't always on the same page with him on everything.

He added: “I have certain games where I felt I should have started i.e. Madrid away or Man United at home. Only going off how I trained and how I’d played going into them games. I felt like I was a better option than certain players that he picked. So, I hold that against Brendan, certain individual games.”
