Ex-Ajax midfielder Wesley Sneijder has kicked against the purchase of Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey as he believes the 23-year-old is not worth the €23m transfer fee.

The Super Eagles defender joined the Eredivisie champions from Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish League after a successful season with the club.

The Leicester City academy product became the third most expensive signing in the club's history following his move last summer.

But the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan attacking midfielder believes €23m is enormous for a defender of Bassey's quality.

“I still think €23m is too much,” Sneijder told Veronica Offside, as per, VI.

The 2010 World Cup finalist added that Bassey needs to improve his ball-handling skills and other aspects of his game.

“This concerns what is demanded of a defender.

“He plays at Ajax, so he will have to be able to play football.

“He might be fantastic in another league. But he has a hard time when he keeps getting released and he has to play from the back.”

Calvin Bassey has dropped on the pecking order under the new manager, John Heitinga.

The Super Eagles defender however starred on his return to the starting eleven as Ajax beat NEC Nijmegen by a lone goal at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Sunday, March 5.
