Jamie Carragher has revealed that Wayne Rooney told him how Manchester United players celebrated when Liverpool beat Chelsea in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League in 2007.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool from the English Premier League got to the semi-final of the competition.

United got knocked out by AC Milan who proceeded to the final to face Liverpool who got there by beating Chelsea.

Speaking with John Terry when he appeared on Sky Sport, Carragher revealed what Rooney told him: “Wayne Rooney told me a story, I think it was 2007, we played you [Chelsea] and I think they were playing AC Milan. And Milan ended up beating them but we must have played the night before.

“And Wayne Rooney told me when we won on penalties all the Man United [players] watching it together in the hotel erupted and cheered.

“You think Liverpool-Man United, the rivalry, so I think it shows how respected you [Chelsea] were as a team, and feared, but also how much Jose and Chelsea at that time got under so many people’s skin.”

Terry who was Chelsea's captain at the time stated that the club's rivals must have felt jealous about everything the club did since the arrival of new owner Roman Abramovich.

Terry said: “I think we were probably disliked by the whole of the Premier League!

“I think with Roman [Abramovich] coming in at that time and injecting the money he injected and the players he brought in, and what Mourinho was about as well, it was like within those meetings we had it was us against them.

“We want to build a fortress, everyone hates us, he [Mourinho] kind of blew that up in his interviews but within that group he made us feel so together and so connected that we could go out and beat anyone.

“So regardless of the fear factors and how good other teams were, we always had that sense we could win any game.”
