Real Madrid wins 11th Spanish Super Cup trophy on penalties

Real Madrid have registered their first trophy of the 2019/2020 season after a penalty shootout win over rivals Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Sergio Ramos's decisive spot-kick helped Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 on penalties to win their 11th Spanish Super Cup title.

Atletico were architects of their own downfall after Saul Niguez and Thomas Partey missed their penalties following a goalless 120 minutes in Saudi Arabia.

Real Madrid would have Federico Valverde to thank for sacrificing himself after receiving a red card in extra time for fouling Alvaro Morata when he was clean through, leaving Real 10 men down but not out.

Zidane's men would later triumph in the shootout.

The tournament had a new format this season, with the top two from La Liga and the Copa del Rey finalists playing in a four-team competition rather than the two winners playing each other.

Real, despite finishing third in La Liga, qualified because Barcelona won the league and finished runners-up in the Cup.
