Rangers paid the price for cashing in on Aribo, Bassey

Glasgow Rangers endured a disastrous UEFA Champions League campaign this season, finishing bottom of their Group without a single point.

Following their poor showing, the Gers were tagged as the worst team in the history of the competition by many media outlets, a tag Rangers will live with, at least until another team produces a more wretched Champions League campaign than the one they completed on Tuesday.

Rangers faced Napoli, Ajax and Liverpool and bowed out of the competition with a record of played six, lost six, two goals scored, and 22 conceded.

The performance was shocking as the team only appear in the final of the Europa League less than six months ago, beating the likes of RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund before losing on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt.

According to several Scottish media outlets, one of the factors responsible for the show of shame was the recruitment policy of the club in the last transfer window.

Rangers lost two massive players in Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo from the team that played the Europa League final and won the Scottish Cup last season.

Souttar and Davies were brought in as replacements for the duo, but Souttar with a well-documented injury record that sadly has become worse at Ibrox – and Davies, is yet to make his mark and still struggling to stay fit.

Ridvan Yilmaz was supposed to be the answer at left back but the young Turkish international has barely played due to a bad and lack of pace.

It is evident that the exit of Aribo and Bassey weakened the team and Rangers can’t say they’ve replaced them adequately.

Rangers were outclassed by all their opponents, but the club can strengthen the squad with the January transfer window around the corner.
