Super Eagles legend Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has hailed Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bonou for his remarkable performance against Spain in their last-16 clash on Tuesday, December 12.

The Sevilla shot stopper inspired the Atlas Lions to a historic victory at the Education City Stadium after saving two spot kicks to help his country to their first-ever quarterfinal qualification at the FIFA World Cup.

Bono, 31, saved Carlos Soler and captain Sergio Busquet's spot kicks after PSG star Pablo Sarabia had hit the woodwork with Spain's first penalty kick.

Spanish-born Achraf Hakimi slotted home the winner for the Atlas Lions with a cheeky Panenka to seal Morocco's place in the last 8.

After the game, the ex-Super Eagles captain praised the Moroccan team for their ability to keep the Spanish team at bay for the entire 120 minutes.

“They have done ever so well. Well deserved (win) as well.. It takes a lot of courage.. It takes a lot to defend for over 120 minutes without losing focus, without losing concentration.

“They deserve every bit of luck because penalties can go either way but what a performance and congratulations,” the ex-Bolton Wanderers midfielder said.

At the same time, Okocha had some special praises reserved for the 31-year-old Sevilla shot stopper for his composure.

“From the body language of the keeper, he trusts himself, he’s very confident. He trusts in his ability.

“It looked like this is the only way they could have won the game because they got battered when it came to possession play but when your game is to defend, you should at least have some qualities when it gets to penalties. And that’s what they showed,” The former Bolton Wanderers man concluded.

Morocco are the only African team remaining in the tournament. The Atlas Lions will take on Portugal on Saturday, December 10 for a place in the semi-final.
