Qatar 2022: Nigeria, four other top football nations who didn't qualify

Nigeria's bid for a 7th appearance at the FIFA World Cup hit a snag following the Super Eagles failure to beat the Black Stars of Ghana at the MKO Abiola Stadium in the capital Abuja back in March.

But the three-time African champions were not the only suspects to miss out on the 22nd edition of the Mundial.

In this piece, we take a look at some notable countries that will not feature at the global showpiece after they failed to book their ticket to Qatar.

Italy

Undoubtedly the biggest name on the list, the European champions failed to qualify for this year's FIFA World Cup after their shocking defeat to North Macedonia in the European playoff semi-finals.

Chile

The South Americans failed to qualify for the World Cup for a second consecutive edition after missing out in Russia four years ago.

Despite their top stars in Europe, Chile finished 7th in the South American playoffs.

Egypt

The seven-time African champions couldn't make the trip to Qatar after failing to beat current African champions Senegal in the playoffs.

The Pharoah's absence didn't come as a shock as the North Africans have only for the World Cup on just three occasions in 1934, 1990, and 2018.

Columbia

After finishing in the quarterfinals and the round of 16 in Russia and Brazil, the CONMEBOL side failed to qualify for the 22nd edition of the World Cup.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will kick off in the next 10 days in the Gulf region of Qatar.
