Pep Guardiola matches Jose Mourinho's Premier League record after Nottingham Forest win

Pep Guardiola continued to exert his dominance in the English Premier League as his win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, September 23 put him in line for another record.

As reported on BBC, City had to adjust, with Jeremy Doku coming off for Kalvin Phillips in a forced substitution. Despite Nottingham Forest’s best efforts, they could not get past City as Guardiola won his sixth league game in a row.

Guardiola matches Mourinho’s record

This is Manchester City’s third title defence in a row, and despite rivals like Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool showing some intent, it still looks like the title is Guadiola’s to lose.

In winning a sixth league game in a row, Guardiola inadvertently matched a feat only achieved by Jose Mourinho all the way back in 2005.

According to the Premier League on X, Guardiola is only the second reigning champion to win the first six games of the following season.

Mourinho achieved the same with Chelsea in the 2005/2006 season with wins over Wigan, Arsenal, West Brom, Tottenham, Sunderland and Charlton Athletic.

Interestingly, Mourinho’s Chelsea went on to retain the title that season.

At this rate, Guardiiola is threatening to take all of the Premier League records previously held by Mourinho.

In 2022, the Spaniard became the fastest manager to clock 250 wins while managing an English top flight teams, doing so in 344 gams.

Once again, Mourinho was the previous owner of the record with 250 wins in 396 games.
