The 2023 FA Cup final lived up to its billing as cross-town rivals, Manchester United and Manchester City went toe-to-toe with each other on June 3.

Manchester City were the favourites going into the game, but their counterparts in red offered great competition, with the tie only decided by the finest of margins.

United failed to stop City's dreams of an unprecedented treble, but as Erik ten Hag avered in his post-match thought, his team could take the satisfaction of pushing the Premier League champions all the way.

Like any other derby or final, every decision was contested and scrutinised both by fans and the managers on the touchline.

So controversial were some of the decisions that Guardiola and ten Hag actually had a heated argument in the first half of the game.

United vs City: controversial decisions

Ilkay Gundogan needed only 15 seconds to put the Citizens on their way before United fought back through a Bruno Fernandes penalty. The decision to award the penalty after a Jack Grealish handball irked Guardiola.

A few minutes later, City were denied a penalty of their own after Kevin De Bruyne went down from a Fred challenge inside the area. Casemiro was also lucky to avoid a booking or a red card after he thumped Manuel Akanji.

Manchester Evening News reports those decisions were the basis of the confrontation between Guardiola and ten Hag on the touchline.

The argument, however, did not get out of hand, with the fourth official Peter Bankes seeing no need to intervene.

The two managers are shown to hold each other in high regard and one cannot wait for the next Manchester derby next season.
