Paul Onuachu’s transfer saga: Why he did not return to Genk from Southampton

KAA Genk’s Sporting Director, Dimitri De Condé, recently revealed why Paul Onuachu’s highly anticipated return to KRC Genk did not materialize during the summer transfer window, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles forward was strongly linked with a move back to the Belgian Pro League just a few months after his departure from Southampton during the winter transfer window. His time at Southampton had been characterized by limited playing minutes and a goalless stint.

Ultimately, the tall Nigerian international found a new escape route, securing a season-long loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

De Condé provided insights into the intricacies of the transfer negotiations, shedding light on Onuachu’s strong desire to rejoin the Smurfs.

“It was a very intensive file. You should know that Paul absolutely wanted to return. And we as a club were prepared to make it the largest incoming transfer in Genk football in financial terms. That was all worked out,” explained Condé, as quoted by Voetbalnieuws.

However, despite the willingness of both parties, no agreement was reached. De Condé clarified, “For Southampton, it had to be done through an exchange with Paintsil. And at the end of the day, he did not want to go. They were not able to convince him, and I am very happy that Joseph is with us with his heart. But in the end, that is at the expense of Paul, and we had to switch.”

Paintsil, despite external pressures and advice, ultimately decided against the move to England, choosing to remain at Genk.

This transfer saga underscores the complexity of negotiations in football and emphasizes the significance of following one’s heart in making crucial career decisions.
