SUPER Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala delivered a powerful message beyond football after Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Senegal in an international friendly on Friday, Soccernet.ng reports.
The nine-time African champions defeated the Teranga Lionesses at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne as part of preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria dominated much of the encounter, with Oshoala opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute before Toni Payne doubled the advantage shortly before halftime. Senegal pulled one back late in the game, but the Super Falcons held on to secure a deserved victory.
While her goal contributed to the win, it was Oshoala’s post-goal celebration that attracted widespread attention. The veteran forward held up a wristband bearing the inscription, “Save the teachers. Bring back our children,” drawing attention to the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
The message relates to the kidnapping of 39 students and seven teachers who were reportedly abducted by armed gunmen during attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15. Two school staff members were also said to have lost their lives during the incident.
Oshoala’s gesture has been widely interpreted as a call for urgent action and a reminder that the victims remain in captivity. By using her platform on the international stage, the former African Women’s Player of the Year sought to keep public attention focused on the humanitarian crisis and the need for the safe return of those abducted.
The Super Falcons will face Senegal again on Monday as preparations for the WAFCON tournament continue.
