Orban risks sanction after Verona fan fight

One-time Super Eagles invitee, Gift Orban, could face possible sanctions at Hellas Verona FC after clashing with a fan outside the stadium on Sunday, April 19.

Orban was involved in an ugly post-match incident outside the Stadio Bentegodi following Verona’s 1-0 defeat to AC Milan, with Adrien Rabiot scoring the decisive goal.

According to eyewitness accounts reported by Corriere dello Sport, the striker appeared visibly frustrated after the final whistle and initially declined a supporter’s request for a photograph.

The situation escalated when another supporter struck Orban’s car, prompting the Nigerian to step out of his vehicle. A heated exchange followed, which reportedly turned physical and was captured on mobile phones by bystanders.

Authorities have since begun reviewing the footage, with the Digos—Italy’s specialist police unit for maintaining public order at sporting events—present at the scene to conduct investigations.

In a statement on Monday, Verona distanced themselves from the incident.

“Hellas Verona FC, with reference to the incidents that took place after the Hellas Verona v Milan match in the parking area adjacent to the Bentegodi Stadium, involving player Gift Orban and a group of supporters, firmly dissociates itself from and condemns any form of violent conduct,” the club said.

“The club will continue to gather and assess relevant information.”

Orban joined Verona on loan from TSG Hoffenheim last summer, with an option to buy, and has enjoyed a productive debut Serie A campaign, registering seven goals and three assists in 28 league appearances.

Despite failing to score in his last nine matches, the 23-year-old remains Verona’s top scorer this season, with the next highest contributors managing just two goals each.

His performances have attracted interest from clubs monitoring emerging talent in the division, making the timing of the incident particularly unfortunate.

Both Orban’s reaction and the supporter’s conduct are expected to come under scrutiny as investigations continue, with further details likely to emerge in the coming days.
