Club Brugge manager Carl Hoefkens has praised Nigerian international Raphael Onyedika and his teammates for their historic win over Athletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

The Belgian club beat the former Spanish champions 2-0 at home on Tuesday, October 4 courtesy of goals from Kamal Sowah and Ferran Jutgla.

21-year-old Onyedika who joined Club Brugge from FC Midtjylland in the summer transfer window played the full 90 minutes of the game.

Sharing his thoughts after the game, Club Brugge head coach Carl Hoefkens expressed his excitement with his team's performance.

“Everything went according to plan,” Hoefkens was quoted as saying.

“I think we knew beforehand what we wanted to do and I’m happy how my players executed that. In possession of the ball, we were able to hurt them, and we did that very well in the first half.

“The second half was more difficult, but even then, we were dangerous.”

Club Brugge have won all three of their UCL matches this season and sits on top of Group B with 9 points ahead of FC Porto, Athletico Madrid, and Bayern Leverkusen.

They will visit the Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital for the return fixture next.
