Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has deflected individual praise onto his Trabzonspor teammates after extending his record-breaking scoring run to eight consecutive games in Friday’s 3-1 Super Lig victory over Fatih Karagumruk, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Onuachu opened the scoring in the 20th minute before fellow Nigerian Chibuike Nwaiwu netted twice after the break to seal the points, with the 31-year-old also providing the assist for Nwaiwu’s second goal with a headed pass in the 50th minute.
Speaking to beIN Sports after the match, Onuachu was characteristically modest about his contribution.
“We started the game a bit slowly. At halftime, we talked with our teammates and coach in the locker room. We discussed the need to increase our energy and give more. After that conversation, the team reacted well, and we managed to get the three points,” he said.
“As a striker, you have to use your skills to help your team. That’s what I try to do. I can’t achieve this without my teammates. More credit should go to my teammates than to my goals.”
The goal against Karagumruk was historic on multiple levels. According to Turkish sports daily Fanatik, Onuachu’s six-game league scoring streak broke the previous club record of five consecutive games held by current Trabzonspor head coach Fatih Tekke, set during the 2004/05 season. He also surpassed similar five-match runs recorded by Shota Arveladze and Paulo Henrique in the process.
Onuachu now has 18 goals in 21 Super Lig appearances this season, seven of them headers, underscoring his dominance in the air. Since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, the former FC Ebedei academy graduate has scored in every match he has featured in, registering eight goals across league and cup competitions.
The Nigerian leads the Super Lig golden boot race and has been involved in nearly half of Trabzonspor’s league goals this season as the club sit third with 51 points, four behind second-placed Fenerbahce, who hold a game in hand. With rivals dropping points in recent weeks, Onuachu’s extraordinary form is giving Trabzonspor renewed belief that the title race may yet have more twists ahead.
His performances have also drawn interest from outside Turkey, with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli reportedly willing to triple his current wages of approximately €48,000 per week to lure him away before his contract expires in 2028.
