Despite Manchester City lagging behind Arsenal with five points with nine matches remaining in the Premier League, Wayne Rooney believes Pep Guardiola's side can still spring up a surprise to clinch the PL title.

The Gunners are edging closer to their first Premier League title since the 2003/2004 season following their incredible run this season.

Despite tipping Mikel Arteta's side as firm favourites to clinch the title, former Manchester United striker, Rooney believes it will come as no surprise if the Cityzens end up defending their title.

“The title race? Nothing would surprise me from Manchester City,” Rooney told The Times.

“They could put together an incredible run and still win it, but you’ve to say Arsenal are favourites. I don’t see a collapse from them.”

Speaking on the race for the top four, the former England international also tipped Liverpool to sneak into the Champions League places ahead of Newcastle United.

“The top four? A few weeks ago, there looked like a possibility Manchester United could challenge for the Premier League title.

“I am sure they [Man United] will finish in the top four.

“So Manchester United will be there, but I’ve a suspicion that Liverpool might sneak into it.

“They are capable of going on a run. I see Newcastle [United], despite the great job Eddie [Howe] has done, falling just a little short.”
