Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has disclosed that the club signed Victor Osimhen after missing out on Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

The Naples-based team signed the Super Eagles striker from Lille in the French Ligue 1 in 2020 for a club-record fee of €75m after Erling Haaland joined Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga.

Guintoli has revealed that the duo was the club's top priority because they rated them on the same pedestal.

“The contract with Salzburg was done already; we would have paid his €25m clause. He and Osimhen were our priorities and when Haaland opted for Borussia Dortmund, we went for Victor. To us, they were on the same level,” he told Il Corriere Dello Sport.

The two young strikers have been phenomenal for their respective clubs this season.

Haaland picked up from where he left off in Borussia Dortmund where he scored an astonishing 62 goals in 67 matches across all competitions.

The Norwegian international has scored a whopping 18 goals in 13 appearances in the Premier League since joining the Cityzens in the summer.

Osimhen, 23, on the other hand, has also managed 9 Serie A goals despite missing action for some weeks due to injury.

The duo leads the goal king race in the Premier League and the Premier League.

Osimhen's outstanding performance has inspired Napoli to establish a healthy 8-point lead at the top Serie A before the World Cup break.
