Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel has disclosed what former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich told him when his father, Pa Michael Obi, was kidnapped in 2018.

The former Chelsea midfielder's dad was kidnapped in Nigeria when he was representing the country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup which was hosted by Russia.

The former Stoke City star claimed he received a call a few hours before Nigeria's game against Argentina in the group stage to get the news of his father's kidnap.

The unfortunate news about his dad didn't stop the Blues legend from featuring in the game against La Albiceleste.

In a recent interview with TalkSPORT, while talking about Luis Diaz, who is currently facing the same issue, the former Nigeria national team captain explained how Abramovich offered to help him rescue his dad, according to a report by Football365.

“Chelsea were very supportive. I remember Roman [Abramovich] saying do you want me to send people over? Because I know if I send people over, I can get your dad out. I was like, how are you going to do this?

“He said don’t worry about that. Just let me, if you want that option, and I can do it.

“And I am happy to see that Liverpool are very supportive. I must give credit to Liverpool for what they’re doing.”
