Kylian Mbappe couldn't hide his surprise as he witnessed AC Milan fans hurl counterfeit bills featuring the face of Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during their Champions League showdown on Tuesday night (November 7).

This marked Donnarumma's first return to the San Siro as an opponent since the Italian goalkeeper departed as a free agent to join PSG in the summer of 2021, snubbing a new contract offer that could have fetched Milan a substantial €80 million.

Donnarumma, who also serves as the No.1 for the Italian national team, faced a barrage of boos and disparaging chants from the crowd during the warm-up, as cited by Football Italia.

In line with the ultimatum issued by the Milan ultras, imitation banknotes adorned with the 24-year-old's image were thrown at the Italian shot-stopper, serving as a visual manifestation of the fans' indignation over his perceived betrayal two years ago.

The spectacle, widely discussed in the lead-up to the Group F clash, appeared to catch Mbappe off guard.

The French forward, who shared the field with Donnarumma, looked on with a mixture of astonishment and amusement at the impassioned demonstration by the Milan faithful.

Why Milan fans threw fake dollars

Despite six years of unwavering support from the Rossoneri fans, feelings of betrayal emerged when he opted to depart and join PSG as a free agent.

Having risen through the ranks at the Serie A club, Donnarumma generated controversy when he made a free transfer to PSG in 2021.

During his tenure, the 24-year-old featured in 251 games for the club, securing victory in the Italian Super Cup during the 2016/17 season before his departure for the French capital.

According to talkSPORT, although his childhood club tabled a contract offer of around £120,000 per week, he chose to make the transition to the Parc des Princes. Hence the sentiment of betrayal within the fanbase.
