Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea boss aims dig at referees over VAR blunders

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has added his voice to the ongoing saga in English football over the use of video assistant referees, and his comments were directed at the officials.

English football is rocked by the scandal that ensued after human and technological errors were acknowledged in the Tottenham vs Liverpool game.

Luis Diaz's legitimate goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside, and the VAR waved it on, a decision that appeared to have influenced the outcome of the game, which Tottenham won 2-1.

According to BBC Sports, the referee's body, PGMOL, acknowledged significant human error, which required VAR intervention. Still, the officials in charge did not intervene and agreed with the on-pitch decision, thinking it had given a goal.

Pochettino aims dig at English referees

The scandal has seen Liverpool officially petition for a replay of the game, with head coach Jurgen Klopp insisting that alone settles the incident in which his team received two red cards.

Chelsea boss Pochettino, speaking ahead of the trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley, shared his thoughts on the incident as quoted by Football London.

"It's two different things. I trust in VAR. I trust in the car but not the driver. That is the problem," he said

"I was very critical from the beginning many years ago. I think it's a good decision to use the technology of whether it is across the line to keep, and if it is offside also, to take time is important."

"Human mistakes can happen. When the referee makes some mistakes, we can all accept it because that can happen. But when using technology, it is difficult to complain… For me, it is about simplifying the situation," he added.

The Blues have not won back-to-back games since March and hope to get the better of newly promoted side Burnley after beating London neighbours Fulham 2-0 in their last game.
