Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca has revealed the reason behind Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho's absence from the squad upon his return from the African Cup of Nations.

Despite concerns about his fitness, the 27-year-old opted to represent the Super Eagles at this year's AFCON, a decision reportedly at odds with Maresca's wishes. The manager had hoped Iheanacho would focus on his recovery and return fully fit.

Iheanacho's AFCON involvement was limited, with his first significant contribution coming as a substitute in the semifinals, where he scored the decisive penalty against South Africa.

He also featured in the final against Ivory Coast, as Nigeria fell short in a 2-1 defeat to the hosts.

Upon his return to Leicester, however, Iheanacho has seen limited game time, making just two appearances totaling less than 30 minutes.

Addressing the situation, Maresca stated, “I already mentioned in January, during the window, when we had some issues. I said it was not the moment. At the end of the season, we can talk about it. The same thing with the financial problems. Nobody told me, which I don’t think is the right thing to do. There are things we need to clarify. For the rest, we are fantastic. We are all happy,” as quoted by Leicester Mercury.
