Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly has lifted the lid on what informed his decision to leave Chelsea Football Club after just one season.

The 32-year-old became the latest Chelsea player to secure a move to Saudi Arabia after Ngolo Kante joined Al-Ittihad last week.

The ex-Napoli defender signed a three-year contract with Saudi's Al-Hilal in a deal worth €23m.

Speaking on why he left the Blues for the Saudi league, the Senegalese international explained that he joined Al-Hilal because of his religious affiliation.

He added that the move will also help his family to live well.

“I chose the best team in the Arab league. I’m happy because as a Muslim I arrive in the right country.

“And I’m thrilled to be one of the first to land in an evolving championship. I hope to help Saudi Arabia and Al-Hilal to write a new sporting history,” Koulibaly said.

“In addition, this very important contract. I will be able to help my whole family to live well: from my parents to my cousins, and above all to support the social activities of my association ‘Capitane du Coeur ‘ in Senegal,” he added.

Koulibaly managed 2 goals in 32 appearances for the Blues across all competitions.
