Former Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro has named Victor Boniface as the player who could have made the difference for Nigeria at the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

The Bayern Leverkusen star sustained an injury at Super Eagles camp in Abu Dhabi few days to the start of the tournament.

The 23-year-old was tipped to team up with Napoli's Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles' attack forcing Peseiro to alter his game plan.

In his stead, OGC Nice's Terem Moffi was drafted into the squad.

Speaking in a recent interview, Peseiro, who guided the Super Eagles to the grand finale for the first time in over a decade named the injured star as the player who could have help change the fortunes of the team.

“I will say that Boniface would have made the difference without injury,” he said in an interview in Portugal, according to AfricafootUnited.

“He was very confident and can play comfortably in our two-man attacking style. He can also play on both sides of the strikers and that would have made him our invisible arc in the tournament.

“Our options to refine our style were limited in his absence.”

Nigeria lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the grand finale.
