The real reason behind José Peseiro's decision not to give call-ups to players in the NPFL has come to light.

The Portuguese gaffer who left his role in late February after guiding the Super Eagles to the final of the Nations Cup was widely criticized by local media for not paying attention to the talents in the local league.

Reflecting on his 18-month spell in charge of the Super Eagles, one of the aides of the former Sporting Lisbon manager has disclosed that 63-year-old didn't identify any local player who was good enough to make the team.

Speaking to OwnGoalNigeria, he added that the former Venezuela coach watched more of the NPFL matches than even his predecessor Gernot Rohr but couldn't find the quality he needed.

”We all knew he watched a lot of games while here, but never saw anyone who can challenge for a spot in the team. The second idea was to call a young player who can develop and benefit from the experience of training with the senior team”, he said.

”The one thing he said worked against most players who are perceived as stars in the NPFL is there ages and the fact that they are slow. He spoke with a couple of coaches in the league on this urging them to recruit young and quick players. That is why he only considered goalkeepers and some young players while he was here as coach”, he concluded.
