The hunt for a new head coach for Nigeria has taken an interesting twist.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has failed to replace José Peseiro after the Portuguese gaffer left his role in February after guiding the team to the final of the African Cup of Nations in Ivory.

Despite a flurry of local and expatriate coaches expressing their interest in the vacant role, the NFF are yet to decide on a right candidate to succeed the former Sporting Lisbon manager.

Earlier reports indicated that the technical committee of the NFF favours a foreign coach to be in charge of the three-time African champions.

Former Pep Guardiola assistant Domenec Torrent and ex-Cameroon coach Francisco Conceicao who reportedly applied for the role are said to be the favourite among the candidates.

Other reports have also linked former Super Eagles star Emmanuel Amunike to the position.

However, the latest report as per OwnGoalNigeria suggests that the NFF could reappoint José Peseiro to return to the role he left two months ago.

The report indicated that positive talks have been held between the NFF and representatives of the Portuguese tactician.

According to the report, the agreement on remuneration makes his return as coach of the Nigerian team a possibility.
