Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has shared his experience when he ran into Sir Alex Furgeson for the first time after snubbing Manchester United to sign for Chelsea.

The former Super Eagles midfielder made one of the most controversial transfer moves in history after he joined the Blues having initially agreed to a move to Old Trafford back in 2006.

After turning 18 in 2005, Manchester United convinced Mikel Obi to pen a four-year deal without consulting the player's agent.

The Red Devils were expecting the then-young midfielder at Old Trafford in January 2006, but the Blues hijacked the deal as they reached a different agreement with the player and his agent.

Mikel Obi, who was captured in a Man United jersey at press conference later claimed he was coerced into signing the deal with Manchester United.

The former Super Eagles captain eventually joined the Blues in a deal worth of
£16m.

Recounting his first meeting with the retired Manchester United boss following the controversial transfer, Mikel noted that Furgeson gave him a stern look but did not utter a word and walked off while chewing his gum.

Speaking on The Debrief Podcast, Mikel said: “I saw him one time, it was Manchester United against Chelsea, I was coming out of the dressing room and as I was coming out of the door at the corner he was coming out and I just s*** myself”

“I can't remember what happened, I think I tripped up on the stairs, he looked at me and he just walked out. He started chewing his gum and just walked out. He didn't say a word. It was a death stare.

“I met him a few times after that, and we started talking about it and he forgot about it and forgave me.”

Mikel Obi enjoyed an 11-year spell at Chelsea, making 372 appearances for the Blues and scored 6 goals.
