Former Super Eagles international John Mikel Obi has disclosed that his decision to sign for Chelsea over Manchester United was the best decision of his career.

The former Nigerian captain was at the centre of a transfer battle between the Red Devils and the Blues in 2005 before joining Chelsea a year later.

According to the 2013 AFCON winner, choosing to join the London-based club over Sir Alex Furguson's side paid off.

Mikel became one of Chelsea's most decorated players, winning the UEFA Champions Leagues, Europa League, two Premier League titles, two league cups, and four FA Cup titles in an 11-year spell at the club.

"I don't regret any decision I made because I enjoyed everything I achieved at Chelsea - it's the best decision I have ever made in my life," Mikel told the BBC.

"I signed a pre-contract for Manchester United when I was 17. If you are a kid and you see Sir Alex Ferguson right in front of you with the contract, of course you will be tempted."

Mikel left Chelsea in 2017 after making 249 appearances for the club. He joined the Chinese Super League side Tianjin TEDA.

He announced his retirement from professional football last week at age 35.
