I convinced Napoli to sign Victor Osimhen — Jorginho

Arsenal Midfielder Jorginho has revealed that he was convinced Victor Osimhen would be an instant hit at Napoli and advised the club to sign him.

The Italian international revealed he was contacted by Napoli’s director of football Christian Giuntoli, to get for his opinion on Osimhen who was with French Ligue 1 side Lille at the time.

Jorginho and Osimhen faced each other in the UEFA Champions League during their time Chelsea and Lille, with the Nigerian scoring in both legs before joining Napoli in €75m deal.

Osimhen has scored 17 goals in 19 league games for Jorginho’s former club Napoli this season, forming deadly partnership with Georgian star Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The duo has helped the Partenopei win 20 games from 23 in Serie A and are 15 points above second-placed Inter, with combined 31 goals across all competitions this season.

“They are doing incredible things, honestly, I didn’t know the guy playing on the wing [ Kvaratskhelia],” admitted Jorginho.

“I knew Osimhen. I had played against him in Champions League, and he had given a hard time to our defenders. Giuntoli called me before signing him and I told him to sign him straight away, he is very promising and is doing really well.”

“They [Osimhen and Kvara] are flying and everything is going well. There is winning energy.”

Jorginho was part of the Napoli side that earned 91 points in 2017-18, but failed to win the title, seeing Juventus crowned Italian champions with 95 points.
