Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has lifted the lid on why Spain midfielder Rodri snubbed Los Blancos to sign for rivals Barcelona this summer.

Rodri, who was adjudged the Best Player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, but ended up with their archrivals, signing a four-year deal with the Catalans from Manchester City.

Speaking in a recent interview with El Chiringuito, Mourinho disclosed that he spoke with Rodri a number of times, but the midfielder later had doubts about joining the club.

The Special One, however, added that Madrid is too big a club for a player who has second thoughts about joining them.

"I spoke with Rodri a couple of times.

"Real Madrid made him a very good offer. But Rodri had doubts; he doubted, and I think what happened is that the doubts Rodri had gave me doubts.

"He's an extraordinary player. But I think Real Madrid are so big that we can't have players who think twice," Mourinho said.
