Harry Maguire: Fans say the same thing as reports claim defender is unwilling to leave Man United

Rival fans have taken to social media with hilarious reactions to reports Harry Maguire is unwilling to depart from Manchester United in the summer.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after enduring a difficult 2022/23 campaign where he only made 16 appearances.

Maguire fell down the pecking order at United after the signature of Lisandro Martinez, who has proven to be a relevation under Ten Hag.

But despite Martinez’s injury, Maguire still failed to get a regular place in the starting XI at Old Trafford, with Ten Hag deciding to morph Luke Shaw into a make-shift centre back.

Tottenham has been tipped to be Maguire’s plausible destination, but the fact that the North Londoners are not in Europe makes the club unattractive for the England international.

Aston Villa is another possible destination but according to TalkSport, Maguire instead wants to stay and fight for a place in the United squad.

If this is true, then Ten Hag may have an uphill task in acquiring Napoli centre-back Kim Min Jae, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

It is believed that Ten Hag was banking on the sale of Maguire to boost funds to acquire the South Korean, who won the Scudetto with Napoli in the just concluded season.

Meanwhile, fans on social media were quick to react to reports of Maguire’s intent to stay at Manchester United with varying reactions.

@Footballspeak said: “That is not at all surprising. Why should Maguire take a big pay cut so that Manchester United can earn a big transfer fee? If Man Utd want to get rid of Maguire, they need a solution that minimises his pay cut, which may mean letting him go on a cheap/free to a club he likes.”

While @tochi added: “Maguire has a contract binding with Man Utd and he’s the captain. You cannot force him to leave. Come to a settlement with him and pay him off. That’s what Real Madrid did with Hazard.”

@wooderooski said: “Of course he doesn't. He's riding that 200k a week gravy train for another 2 years.”

@jonvader said: “When you give a player the kind of contract that he can do this, you get what happens here. In the future we have to get players in who we are sure we want to keep for years, or give shorter contracts incase it goes bad. Hopefully with Erik in charge this will not happen.”
